SCARAB Gaming Convention

Open Gaming A.K.A. Pick-up Gaming A.K.A. The One Shot.

No gaming convention would be complete without open gaming. This convention is no exception to that rule. Open gaming goes on throughout any such convention, and it is common place in many conventions, that all of the gaming is made up by people playing open games. Open gaming is not generally discouraged by the convention management; in fact, open games are a large part of the appeal of gaming conventions. In some cases it may be the only time a person has a chance to play a game they haven't or don't get to play that often. It allows players to try out new games they have been interested in seeing and allows people to exchange ideas about home games.

Register a Game

How does open gaming work?

A game master (also called a 'GM'), submits an event using the process HERE and we put it on the schedule. Then convention attendees sign up to play in that event at the time slot it was made availble. We will list the games that have been submitted and allow guests to sign up for those games a few weeks before and during the convention.

GM Discounts

SCARAB offers the following discounts and rewards for GMs that meet the following qualifications:

Tier I GM or Volunteer (minimum 35 hours required):
Free Badge
1/4 of a Hotel Room or the equivalent in SCARAB coins
T-shirt
$5 Food Per Diem at the Cantina
GM Gift ($30 Value)

Tier II GM or Volunteer (minimum 25 hours required):
Free Badge
T-shirt
$5 Food Per Diem at the Cantina

Tier III GM or Volunteer (minimum 15 hours required):
Discount Badge ($25)

If you are trying to achieve a specific Tier level for SCARAB 2020, we will verify that you are signed up for the correct number of sessions to qualify for your intended Tier level based on how many sessions you are assigned to prior to SCARAB. If you do not meet the requirements, you will be invoiced for the remainder of any fees still owed. For example, if you are intending to be a Tier III (3) GM, you need 15 hours of GMing. That gets you half off of your badge (down to $25 from $50). If you don't sign up for at least 15 hours by the start of SCARAB 2020, you will be required to make up the badge fee difference.

Where we differ from others.

Most conventions only give you credit if you run twelve (12) hours of gaming, but SCARAB believes there are lots of game masters that just want to run one game, so we are willing to give you credit for a single (1) game. Ask us and we are happy to customize a gaming convention experience that meets your game mastering needs.

First One's Free!

You have to work all weekend, or part of it, or can't justify buying a one day badge when you can only stay a couple of hours. We understand! That's why we have another policy that differs from every convention we can find: The First Game is on us! That's right you can play up to two hours of games at no charge over the whole of the weekend. Also, remember that the Market Bazaar is completely open to the public. So if you just want to stop by and check us out or you cannot afford to attend all weekend or you have to work or some other reason is keeping you from making it out to the event for more than a few hours. DON'T let that stop you from coming by and getting in a couple of hours of gaming with us.

Ratings

In addition to choosing one of the ratings, GMs should further clarify the content of their games by rating each of the following categories, Violence, Language, Sexual Content, and Adult Themes, at 0 to 3, based on situations and content that they expect to come up in their games, 0 meaning it will not occur, 1 meaning mild or infrequent, and 3 meaning graphic or frequent. Violence includes killing and graphic descriptions of blood and gore, Sexual Content includes suggestive situations and sexual humor as well as actual sex, and Adult Themes includes any potentially questionable, offensive, or disturbing content not previously covered, such as drug, alcohol, tobacco use, disturbing images, the occult, cthulhoid monsters, etc. For more on Ratings, click here.

Parents and players who have questions about the content of a particular game are encouraged to talk to the GM of that game for more information prior to the start of the game.
